A contest is currently underway to crack the RC5 cipher with a 56-bit key
size. Red Hat Software is participating in a large-scale effort by the
Linux community, and if we win, the prize money to be given to Linux
International. Information about this challenge is available at
http://zero.genx.net/ and http://www.virtual.net.au/~rjc/rc5/
Current statistics on the progress of the contest are available at
http://zero.genx.net/bill/
We would like to encourage all internet-connected users to donate their
spare CPU cycles to this cause, which is endorsed by major Linux developers
such as Alan Cox and Dave Miller. If you are willing to participate,
follow these steps:
If you live in the US, download the appropriate client from
ftp://ftp.genx.net/pub/crypto/rc5/ or download the source code
and build it yourself.
If you live outside the US, go to http://www.virtual.net.au/~rjc/rc5/
and download the client, or download the source code and build it.
Make the binary executable with
chmod +x <clientname>
(I use <clientname> as the name of the client binary you downloaded
or built.)
Run this command:
nice <clientname> linux@linuxnet.org
or put it in the background but keep the output around to see how
fast your computer is with
nice <clientname> linux@linuxnet.org > someoutputfile 2>&1 &
I like to check once in a while to see what kind of progress it is
making...
Thanks for your help!
